Rumors have been floating around the internet with “wrestling experts” stating that Chris Jericho had not yet resigned with WWE. The biggest indicator being that Chris Jericho was named the host of ABC’s hottest new game show Downfall.
With WWE currently working on a Chris Jericho DVD tentatively titled: Chris Jericho: The Highlight Reel, wrestling fans have been dreading the end of Chris Jericho. WWE did the same thing when it came time for the retirement match of Shawn Michaels, so it is not crazy to think that Jericho was setting up for a farewell match. And with Chris Jericho touring with Fozzy and current job to Evan Bourne, the time for Jericho’s departure seemed inevitable.
One of Chris Jericho’s greatest attributes in the pro-wrestling industry is that he will do what is best for the business. Unlike other wrestlers, Jericho is not about wins or losses, he’s about making the best match possible. A trait garnered from one of his all-time favorites, Shawn Michaels. So if it means riling up the fans, pissing off his opponent so that it will culminate into a meaningful match, then Chris Jericho will give it his all.
At Fatal 4-Way, Jericho demanded a rematch against Evan Bourne because he mentioned how he has fought his way to the top, and now they are trying to take him out. Even though he lost, Jericho raised the stakes on the following night:
I requested this rematch tonight to make a statement not just to [Evan Bourne], you fly-by-night wannabe. But to every one of these parasites watching right now. Because if I don’t win this match tonight. I’m going to walk out of this arena and out of the WWE… forever.
In the most intense program, fans witnessed near falls, inside cradles, false finishers, and sure-fire submission holds. Jerichoholics then paused as Evan Bourne went up for the Shooting Star Press; the same move that did in Jericho the night before. The career of Chris Jericho flashed in an instant. Would this be how Jericho would go out of the WWE? Losing to a fly-by-night wannabe?
Not on this night.
Jericho, at the last second, countered Bourne’s shooting star-press and struck with the Code breaker for the pin fall victory. Jericho said that he was going to make a statement, and he did. Chris Jericho has no intention of retiring at this point in his career. And why should he? Chris Jericho is still in great physical condition, and is still at the top of his game.
