As of late, Evan Bourne has been sky rocketing into the main-event by pinning top guys with the Shooting Star Press. He has even been named one of the participants in this Sunday’s Money in the Bank PPV, alongside Chris Jericho, Edge, John Morrison, The Miz, Mark Henry, Ted DiBiase, and Randy Orton. However, as fast as his rise has been, it may be killed by “The Dream Killer” Randy Orton.
During the fall of 2009, Kofi Kingston was the hottest thing on RAW, entering a heated feud with Randy Orton. Aside from a few upsets, Orton won the war and Kingston was drafted and downgraded as a mid-carder on SmackDown. The same seems to be occurring to young Evan Bourne, who, despite also being a face, has been subjected to two RKOs by Randy Orton.
The first RKO occurred after Bourne won the match with the Shooting Star Press on Chris Jericho. Bourne banked on the opportunity after Edge had speared his tag team partner Jericho before storming off. Bourne celebrated the win, until Orton, his tag team partner, struck him with the RKO. The end result of the match revealed two things: 1) There will be no alliances come MITB; and 2) Randy Orton is still a heel in disguise.
In 2008, Evan Bourne won the Slammy Award for Finishing Maneuver of the Year for his Shooting Star Press, while Orton’s RKO was a close second. Until last night on RAW, in one of the most shocking counters of the year, the two finishers finally collided. After a scheduled match between Randy Orton and Edge concluded, Chris Jericho and Evan Bourne attacked the two superstars in return for the assault from last week. With Orton layed out, Evan Bourne launched off the top turnbuckle for the Shooting Star Press only to be countered by an RKO in mid-air. The counter was so amazing, it garnered an “OH MY GOD!” from Joey Styles:
Evan Bourne’s Shooting Star Press countered by Randy Orton into an RKO!? OH MY GOD!!!
A rookie mistake for Evan Bourne will be for him to jepordize his chances at winning MITB in order to exact revenge on Orton. Much like when Jeff Hardy jumped off the top of the ladder to break Edge in half at WrestleMania 23, Evan Bourne will most likely do the same to Randy Orton.
