At WrestleMania XXV, WWE made the call to unifiy the Raw and Smackdown tag titles because they felt that there were not enough established teams to support two titles. However, only those that purchased the event on DVD or Blu-ray were able to witness the historic match, because it was filmed prior to the event.
The official Unified Tag belts–renamed WWE Tag Team titles–bare an imprint of two Spartan helmets. The Spartans were known for their tactical prowess and their fighting phalanx formations – to fight side by side.
The prestige of those title are quickly declining because of WWE’s lack of focus in the division. The Hart Dynasty and The Usos were the only solid tag teams for several months. Now that may not be the case as WWE has already started pushing for the Harts to split up. The Usos are still considered green to WWE, and have yet to go over with the fans.
As for other teams, WWE has been patching wrestlers together to test their chemistry:
Vance Archer and Curt Hawkins were formed during the summer, but have seperated as of last week on the October 7 edition of WWE Superstars.
Mark Henry and Evan Bourne have been teaming as of late, but Bourne was currently written off television.
Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov have not taken their partnership seriousy towards title contention. Rather they have been used in comedic skits and matches.
WWE has seriously considered keeping Daniel Bryan and Kaval together for a run at the championships. Yet, a feud between the two is also being considered. Seeing as a feud would allow Kaval to go over with the fans. The only issue that creative is facing is how to pull it off with the two wrestling on different brands.
The current champions Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre were simply given the titles. Not because WWE felt that the two worked well together, but because creative had no plans on what to do with them next. Creative wanted Rhodes and McIntyre around titles even if it was a run as tag team champions. Normally, they would go after the mid-level title, but they are unable seeing as WWE is currently pushing Dolph Ziggler as the I-C champion.
Final Thoughts: With the formation of Nexus, it is shocking that they haven’t gone after the tag titles. Imagine the abuse of the Freebird Rule? And what about NXT Season 2 graduates Michael McGillicutty and Husky Harris? Those two have become a torn in John Cena’s side, so they work well together. And the two are third generation superstars, which WWE loves to exploit. WWE should seriously consider keeping Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith together. We all heard them on commentary a few weeks ago. They do not have the charisma to pull off singles careers. The split will be the same mistake that they made with The Colons and Cryme Tyme. The success for a healthy tag team division is to actually keep teams that work… together.
