In the wake of Edge’s transfer to Smackdown, Raw gained The Straight Edge Savior C.M. Punk. On his first night, not only did Punk qualify for a spot on the Raw Team at Bragging Rights, but he made an impact by destroying Evan Bourne after the bell had ended their match.
“Nothing personal,” was what C.M. Punk yelled at Evan Bourne as he ensnared him in the Anaconda Vice. Three referees came to the aid of Bourne, attempting to detach Punk’s hold. But Punk wouldn’t let go until he got his message across to the Raw locker room.
This is not Punk’s first hoorah on Raw, but it is his first time as a member of the locker room that he shows his vicious side.
Years ago, The Chicago Made Punk was a fan favorite peddling away as a mid-card wrestler. He earned several championships including Intercontinental and World Tag Team title reigns. Punk even managed to cash in his Money in the Bank opportunity against Edge to win his first World title.
But despite becoming a Triple Crown champion within his first year on Raw, C.M. Punk was still considered a mid-card talent and not yet seasoned for the main-event card.
During his two years on the blue brand, Punk gained considerable heat when he cashed in his second MITB contract against mega-fan favorite Jeff Hardy for his second World title. From there, he drove Jeff Hardy out of the WWE… became a three-time World champion… forced The Undertaker his first submission loss… formed the Straight Edge Society faction… and destroyed his own followers for not keeping true to Straight Edge.
The assault on Evan Bourne on Monday Night–costing Evan several months of in-ring action–is Punk’s way of stating that Straight Edge makes him better than everyone else. And Punk’s mission along with his message will lead to a crusade towards becoming the first-ever Straight Edge WWE Heavyweight Champion.
