Unlike The Miz, Big Show did not have to compete for the role of Team Captain. Smackdown’s General Manager Theodore Long handpicked the World’s Largest Athlete based on his credentials. Michael Cole, now commentating on every WWE program, likes to point out that Show turned on his fellow Raw teammates at last year’s Bragging Rights. But what Cole fails to mention was the reason for Show’s turn. Theodore Long guaranteed Big Show a World championship opportunity if he helped Smackdown win. Plus, Show said it himself, he has always been true to the blue brand.
On Smackdown, Big Show dawned on the commentator’s headset and joined in on the discussion as his team was determined through a series of matches. What was great about Big Show’s commentary, was that he wasn’t flashy or gimmicky. He was very soft-spoken and called it as he saw it. He did not pick any favorites, very content with every wrestler that made it on the team. He was naturally happy with Rey Mysterio, Edge, and Kofi Kingston making the cut because they are fellow fan favorites. But even for Jack Swagger, and Alberto Del Rio who refused to shake his hand. Show noted how impressed he was with their wrestling abilities.
Along with natural color commentary skills, The Giant showed some remorse to Kaval. The NXT season two winner demanded an opportunity to earn a spot on Team Smackdown, which Show granted only if he could last five-minutes in the ring. For the majority of the time, Show destroyed Kaval. Stepping on the small of his back, and tossing him around like a rag doll. Show could have ended the match in three-seconds if he wanted, but he felt that if Kaval could last five-minutes of punishment then he had the character to be on team Smackdown. However, Kaval lost his spot to a returning Tyler Reks, who goaded him into a match.
Final Thoughts: Big Show should seriously consider staying with WWE after he retires from professional wrestling as a color commentator. Throughout the past several weeks, WWE has been playing around with multiple personalities in the commentary booth. Michael Cole has been added to the Smackdown broadcast to compensate for Todd Grisham… C.M. Punk called an episode of NXT season three during Michael Cole’s brief absence… and Sports Anchor at WNBC-4, Scott Stanford filled in for Michael Cole on an episode of WWE Superstars. WWE is notably trying to improve the broadcast of all WWE programing, while possibly trying to find a suitable replacement for Michael Cole once he assumes his inevitable position as Raw’s General Manager.
