WWE Championship Match: [C] The Miz vs. Jerry “The King” Lawler
One week prior to his WWE Championship match against The Miz, Jerry Lawler mourned the passing of his mother. While The Miz and broadcast colleague Michael Cole tastefully handled the situation by showing great respect towards Lawler in his tough time, Miz unknowingly warned Lawler not to use this as an excuse to why he would lose on Sunday. Lawler had this to say during an interview on WorldWrestlingInsanity.com:
“(Miz) didn’t want me to use the passing of my mother as an excuse to lose at The Elimination Chamber. In reality, if the young man were in his right mind, he’d know I would not use that as an excuse but as motivation to make my mom proud of me.”
This Sunday at The Elimination Chamber, Jerry Lawler has an opportunity to become the WWE Champion. Then, not only would he wrestle at WrestleMania, something he has never done, but he would headline the damn thing.
However, The Miz should not be taken lightly despite almost losing the belt to Lawler back in December. This past Raw and Smackdown, The Miz proved his ever-evolving skills in the ring by cleaning defeating United States Champion Daniel Bryan and Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston.
Final assessment? Michael Cole will once again interfere on Miz’ behalf, thus continuing their program to WrestleMania.
Raw Elimination Chamber Match – Winner receives a WWE Championship Match at WrestleMania XXVII: John Cena, Randy Orton, CM Punk, John Morrison, Sheamus, R-Truth
There is a terrible sinking feeling at the pit of my stomach that says John Cena will walk out the Elimination Chamber as the number one contender for the WWE Championship. The Champ has competed in three Elimination Chambers in his career and walked out with the WWE Championship two out of the three. John Cena has stated that after his year with The Nexus, he needs this WrestleMania moment. And with The Rock singling out both WWE Champion The Miz and John Cena, Rocky seems to think the same.
The Prince of Parkour, John Morrison definitely has a grudge to settle with his former Tag Team partner The Miz. Whether or not JoMo is ready to headline WrestleMania is uncertain, but it would make for a great main-event for WWE’s following pay-per-view Extreme Rules. The only thing missing from King Sheamus’ possession is the WWE Championship. Having held it twice before, a scepter and cloak from the Lord of the Rings collection doesn’t seem enough to validate his kingship than having championship gold wrapped around his waist. R-Truth could just keep skippin’ and jumpin’ out of the Chamber as the first eliminated.
If anyone out of the six has more motivation to win this Sunday’s Elimination Chamber, it’s Randy Orton. Let’s not forget that it was Orton who successfully turned away challenges from Sheamus and Wade Barrett before losing the belt to The Miz. Since then, Orton has not had a fair chance to regain his championship.
Final assessment? Randy Orton will become embroiled in a feud with CM Punk and The Nexus, while John Cena earns the opportunity to headline WrestleMania.
Smackdown Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: [C] Edge, Drew McIntyre, Rey Mysterio, Wade Barrett, Kane, TBA?
Smackdown celebrated its 600th episode this past Friday, with the crowning of new World Heavyweight Champions. Vickie Guerrero stripped Edge of the World title for using an illegal spear during a title defense, and fired him. In turn, Vickie granted her boyfriend Dolph Ziggler the championship. And yes, it was official. However, Teddy Long returned after weeks of absence due to an assault on his life, (later revealed to be Dolph Ziggler) and forced Ziggler to defend the title against Long’s re-hire, Edge. After about seven-minutes of Edge dominating the match, he put away Ziggler with the Spear to become an eleven-time WWE World Champion.
Immediately following the match, Teddy Long fired Dolph Ziggler thus opening a mysterious 6th slot for Smackdown’s Elimination Chamber. Who’s it going to be? Could it be Triple-H? The Undertaker? Sting? Diesel? Maybe King BooKAA!
Final Assessment? There’s only one man that had Mick Foley say that he was the greatest superstar in WWE… Edge. With Alberto Del Rio competing for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, Edge is the only one to have a connection with him aside from Rey Mysterio. And unlike Mysterio who is already in the midst of a program with Cody Rhodes (possible 6th contestant), Alberto Del Rio injured Edge’s amigito back in September. To have Edge retain, go to WrestleMania, and have Christian in his corner would be a great WrestleMania moment. Edge did hint at a possible reunion at the Royal Rumble when putting away Ziggler with Christian’s Killswitch.
Kofi Kingston vs. Alberto Del Rio
Don’t know why Alberto Del Rio is feuding with Kofi Kingston, seeing as Kingston is a mid-card talent. Come WrestleMania, Del Rio will be challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship, and to further prove himself to be worthy of such an honor, he’ll have to break a lot more wrists from the main-event pool of talents.
Final Assessment? Alberto Del Rio wins by hook or by crook.
WWE Tag Team Championship Match: [C] Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov vs. Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel
Seeing as Wade Barrett and Ezekiel Jackson interfered in the WWE Tag Team Championship match on Smackdown’s 600th episode, shouldn’t there be a no Corre at ringside ruling set in place of this rematch? Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel are former WWE Tag Team Champions having defeated John Cena and David Otunga by order of Wade Barrett long ago. Now members of The Corre, Slater and Gabriel are more confident in their abilities as individuals than when they were Wade’s Nexus lackeys.
The defending champions, Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov have done well to turn away challenges from both Nexus and Corre, as well as The Usos. Santino even almost won the 2011 Royal Rumble, if not for early celebration and the fact that it was Alberto Del Rio’s destiny to win.
Final Assessment? With news of WWE splitting up The Usos, The Hart Dynasty split three-ways, what worth are these WWE Tag Team titles if there are no contestants to defend against? Ring of Honor is holding their 9th Anniversary Show in Chicago Ridge boasting two main-event caliber matches with four of their top tag teams. WWE can barely name three suitable tag teams within their entire conglomerate. With Wade Barrett a contestant for Smackdown’s Elimination Chamber, and Ezekiel Jackson having tossed The Big Show around with two scoop slams, The Corre needs some championship gold.
