Everyone remembers their first WrestleMania. For some it was Hulk Hogan bodyslamming Andre the Giant, Stone Cold Steve Austin refusing to submit to Bret Hart’s Sharpshooter, Batista executing his signature powerbomb to win the World Title from Triple-H, or even when Shawn Michaels’ career ended at the hands of The Undertaker. We remember who we were sitting next to, be it live or at home. And even when watching them over, we subtly recall our initial reactions.
Welcome back to The Wrestling Times. WrestleMania is fastly approaching with some already experiencing all the fan festivities and independent shows in Atlanta, Georgia. Others, such as yours truly, is anticipating watching the event on PPV with some dear friends, probably pop open a couple of brewskis, hopefully there will be some great food. And seeing where the matches take us, and how the stories unfold. Let’s get right in to it and discuss… you guessed it… WRESTLING!
The topic I wanted to talk about is Fandemonium, basically being a fan of the great sport/spectacle known as professional wrestling. What does it mean to be a fan? Is it real to you? Is it brushing off the snide comments, “You know wrestling is fake, right?”
No… I thought people really fought with signature moves, and that arguments were always resolved in a matter of matches, jackass.
For those that quickly say that it’s fake, just don’t get it. For the fan that didn’t know that it was fake, go to the ring and cut your promo, we’ll settle this in the ring, brother.
Professional wrestling for some is a form of theatre featuring larger-than-life comic book styled heroes and villains. Others see it for the technical sport that it is. Then there are those that enjoy every thing about it, from the entertainment, to the sport, to the behind the scenes aspects of professional wrestling.
I’m pretty much obsessed about the whole damn thing. I have a dresser draw filled with DVDs and Magazines, already about to throw out some clothes just so I can start utilizing a second draw. If I’m not watching it, I’m reading it, if I’m not reading, I’m writing, if not that then it’s something else.
Being a fan is attending live events, traveling cross-country to attend that must-see, can’t-wait-to-see show, buying and trading DVDs, ordering events, searching the web for classic promos and matches, making signs, carrying a replica belt, wearing the t-shirts, reading biographies, gawking at women “wrestlers” in their underwear, taking pictures, getting autographs, there is just so much to being a wrestling fan.
But the best part of being a fan are the mark out moments. Things that you weren’t expecting, which is tough in this internet age, that get a wild reaction out of you. But even if you knew, the power that these wrestlers emanate can make you forget and just enjoy the moment.
Where will you be this weekend? Who will you be with? What will you be drinking? Eating? Wearing?
Where will you be when The Undertaker and Triple-H fight?
Where will you be when The Rock, as sure as he is the jabroni beating, pie eating, trail blazing, eye brow raising, always ready to whoop some ass, gets involved in the WWE Championship main event against The Miz and John Cena?
WrestleMania Countdown… 3 days… Are you Ready?
