And her opponent: Hailing from Tokyo, Japan. Weighing: None of your damn business. Awesome Kong!
Welcome back to The Wrestling Times. It has been months since reports leaked that Awesome Kong signed a contract with WWE. Sightings of Kong nearby WWE events were reported from various third-party sources. The wait is finally drawing to a close as this week’s episode of WWE Raw debuted a vignette hyping her arrival. You know the drill, let’s talk–are you ready?–wrestling!
The vignette, shown prior to the WWE Divas Championship Match, revealed a dark menacing figure toying with a blonde Barbie-like doll. Through the darkness, Kong’s signature blonde dreads, and her nose manifested before she flicked the head off of the doll and laughed menacingly.
The way this vignette was shot, and the decision to air it on WWE Raw, are indications that WWE considers her a top prospect, and is taking her arrival seriously.
Since word spread of Kong’s impending arrival, the tone of the Divas locker room has changed. In a unique backstage segment, Eve Torres, having lost the Divas title, was hot over the diatribe of the Divas. No one cares. All any Diva wants is her next shot at the title. All Divas are the same. Eve stormed off leaving Gail Kim and Natalya to ponder her words, before ending the segment with Tamina glaring at the two.
A famous battle cry comes to mind, “Kong’s Gunna Kill You!”
The doll that Kong destroyed in the vignette is a direct message to the Divas division. Since the fall of WWE’s Women’s division after the departures of Lita and Trish Stratus, Divas have had a basic look: blonde, busty, thin models. And as the announcement at the start of the post, and the battle cry indicates: Kong is no Barbie doll, and she loves inflicting punishment.
That’s it for this post. I know usually Wednesday mornings are supposed to be set aside for WWE Tough Enough, but schedule conflicts will force that post to Thursday.
