The news of John Morrison replacing R-Truth in the Triple-Threat main event at Extreme Rules was both shocking and puzzling. R-Truth may not have been a first ballot contender for a majority of wrestling fans, but you cannot fault WWE’s Raw General Manager for wanting a new face in the World Title picture.
Welcome back to The Wrestling Times. Normally, I’m not a fan of R-Truth, but I was willing to give him a chance to show us why he deserved to be in the World Title hunt. But in a matter of excruciating promo minutes, Morrison quickly took his spot at Extreme Rules. That ain’t right, dogg. So you know the drill, let’s discuss–are you ready?–Wrestling!
So imagine returning to the WWE after a stint with TNA. You were the NWA World Champion, and NWA and TNA World Tag Team Champion. You arrive in WWE expecting a wave of momentum, but, instead, you are repackaged with a new name and gimmick. You spend the better part of three years trying to get over, and when you finally earn the golden opportunity to challenge for WWE’s richest prize, your best friend takes it all away.
When R-Truth proclaimed at the top of the program that he would become the next WWE Champion, no one really thought much when John Morrison came out to join in his friend’s spotlight. What at first appeared to be a sincere moment, turned ugly as Morrison quickly revealed his hidden agenda. The Prince of Parkour has been away from the title picture since failing to unseat The Miz on the first WWE Raw of 2011, so when R-Truth earned contention via a Double DQ, Morrison knew what it would take to get back into the Title Hunt. As his former Tag Team partner, John Morrison knew everything there was to know about R-Truth, including his endurance problem.
John Morrison had two choices: Support his friend, or goad him into relinquishing his spot.
JoMo, unfortunately for Truth, chose the latter. He called out R-Truth for taking a water break during the gauntlet contender’s match last week. Since when did drinking water start to be a bad thing? R-Truth fought three people in succession, anyone would need a breather after one opponent, let alone three. Maybe if Morrison had taken a water break, he could have won King of the Ring. Then, Morrison brought up Truth’s smoking addiction. (The reason for shinning light on the water break.) Could C.M. Punk report gimmick infringement? Since when did JoMo become so Straight Edge?
The actions that came after R-Truth lost his championship spot to Morrison, were warranted. What kind of friend goes out of his way to bury you in front of millions of wrestling fans? Thanks to Morrison, R-Truth, instead of skippin’ and jumpin’, will now be smoking and coughing as he embraces his new rule breaking side.
“What’s up, John Morrison, with stealing R-Truth’s Championship spot?
That’s it for the post. The logic behind this awkward WWE Raw open could simply be the result of R-Truth’s lack of championship draw. Does anyone else have any theories? Jot them down in the comment box.
