The wrestling world just lost one of its most famous stars. “Macho Man” Randy Savage — a flashy, sunglasses-clad WWF champion who was known for his elongated catchphrase “Ooooh Yeah” and his frenemy relationship with Hulk Hogan — died today in Florida after suffering a heart attack while behind the wheel, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle. He was 58 years old. Snap into a Slim Jim tonight in his honor. [TMZ] — Kyle Buchanan [NY MAG]
Welcome back to The Wrestling Times. Seeing the news break out first on Twitter, I was praying that it was just some false celebrity death report. But with TMZ, NY Post, New York Magazine, and even WWE reporting on this tragic event there was no denying that “Macho Man” Randy Savage was dead. So let’s briefly discuss The Macho Man.
I never really had much exposure to the “Old School” WWF era, except through DVDs and books. One box-set in particular is The Complete WrestleMania Anthology Volume 1 — consisting of the first five WrestleManias.
WrestleMania III, WWE history books can keep their Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant, the highlight of the night was, without a doubt, Randy Savage defending the Intercontinental Title against Ricky Steamboat. A 5-star match if I ever saw one.
WrestleMania IV, a tournament was held for the vacant WWF Championship. After three grueling matches, Savage met with “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase — who had received a bye during the tournament making him the fresher man — in the night’s main event. He won the WWF Championship, setting him apart and beyond from some of the all-time greatest IC Champions who had never won “The Big One.”
WrestleMania V, the year-long reign came to an end, and the storied-blended to real life-rivalry with Hulk Hogan took off.
Thankfully, I also owned The Complete WrestleMania Anthology Volume 2 so as to see WrestleMania VII, Savage versus Ultimate Warrior, ending with the reunion with Miss Elizabeth.
We all remember the Slim Jim commercials, but I especially was fond of his Bone Saw character in Spider-Man (2002).
As Kyle Buchanan suggested: Snap into a Slim Jim tonight in his honor.
“Macho Man/King” Randy Savage, you will be missed.
