The goal was to get on TV. With a cheap flip cam, a crappy WWE basics tee, a toy Intercontinental championship belt, a YouTube channel, and a nothing-to-lose attitude, Zack Ryder launched the Ryder Revolution.
Everyone’s favorite Broski from the LI has been noticeably absent from RAW TV since losing at WrestleMania and getting kicked in the “bro nuts” by his so-called girlfriend Eve Torres.
As far as how the Zack Pack has been dealing with this: Zack Ryder signs have appeared less and less, and the chanting has died off.
Whatever happened to Ryder or Riot?
Since starting Z! True Long Island Story, Zack Ryder has gotten WWE Shop to create official WWE Zack Ryder tees, the Zack Ryder headbands, sun glasses, foam fingers, and a number of other merch. Zack Ryder moved from wrestling on Superstars to being featured on both Raw and SmackDown. He had his name chanted in MSG after WWE decided not to place him in the Unites States title match against Dolph Ziggler. His popularity even had John Cena and The Rock talking about him. Then at Survivor Series, after all the hours editing footage on his iMac, Ryder finally won his first singles title.
So where did it all go wrong?
When Creative came up to Zack Ryder and told him, “We are going to put you in a love angle with Eve,” his immediate reaction should have been, “WWE is trying to bury me,” instead of his likely reaction, “First the US championship and now Eve?! Broskis, I’ve made it!”
Although Ryder did gain TV time while woo woo wooing Eve, his status as the United States champion dropped. He spent more time asking Eve out on dates rather then defending his championship. So it came as no surprise when, just weeks removed from Survivor Series, he lost the US title to Jack Swagger.
Without the US title, and no luck scoring with Eve, Ryder still had the support from his No.1 broski John Cena. However, being friends with Cena came at a price as Ryder became a target of Kane’s. Zack was chokeslammed off the loading dock and off the RAW stage, and (while wheelchair-bound) was wheeled off the RAW stage (the nastiest bump ever!)
Despite the constant rib, spinal, and neck injuries suffered at the hands of the Big Red Monster, what hurt Ryder the most was his best friend’s betrayal when he caught Cena kissing Eve. That was the final nail in Ryder’s push casket.
The romantic storyline was never about pushing Zack Ryder. If anything, it was about burying his momentum because that’s what happened. Then when WWE launched the WWE YouTube channel (which was already in existance) with original content, it gained control of Ryder’s bargaining chip – Z! True Long Island Story.
With the ability to censor Ryder’s show, which WWE exercised by removing a 2-minute segment from a recent episode, Ryder’s rise to fame stopped.
Yet not all is lost, with Ryder’s marketable skills of taking bumps and wrestling, once again, on Superstars and dark matches, Ryder still has a paycheck. But if Ryder is serious about getting back on WWE TV, he needs to call out to the Zack Pack for another Revolution.
But for now…
“This is the WWE. This is Zack Ryder. This is the WWE pressing stop on Zack Ryder. Any Questions?” – Z! True Long Island Story
