Aries, known as the poster boy of the X Division, relinquished the X Division title for an opportunity to challenge for the TNA Heavyweight title in the main event at Destination X. But Aries, as a true champion, made sure to add one final modicum of prestige to his former championship, whoever is X Division champion going into Destination X will be given the same offer to relinquish it for a chance at the Heavyweight title as he was given.
Bobby Roode arrogantly stated that Austin Aries wasn’t even in his league. To Roode, Aries was nothing more than a paper champion.
Well, actions speak louder than words, and unfortunately for Bobby Roode, Austin Aries backed up his boast as the Greatest Man That Ever Lived, made the most of Hulk Hogan’s offer, and became the new TNA Heavyweight champion.
But it wasn’t without its close calls as Bobby Roode attempted every dirty tactic in his bag of tricks: smashing Aries’ head with the title belt, and delivering a low blow all without the referee’s knowledge. Yet this was after Roode out maneuvered Aries by telegraphing the suicida dive and missile drop kick, and evading the Brain Buster, which meant Roode was getting desperate.
Then, as Roode told A-Double to quit, the turn of the tide came. Austin Aries’ deep seeded passion to be GREAT pushed him to wear down the champ with two Horns of Aries submissions, connected with the suicida, the missile drop kick from both the top and into the corner, and finally dropped Roode with the Brain Buster for the 1, 2, 3!
Austin Aries went from a guy fighting for a contract at last year’s Destination X to the man to beat as TNA’s new World champion. Some wrestlers shine at certain pay per views: Undertaker has WrestleMania, Triple H has SummerSlam, and clearly Austin Aries has Destination X.
This year’s Destination X had a nice WrestleMania IV feeling as wrestlers competed in an evening long tournament to win the vacated X Division championship. Yet the event wouldn’t have earned its A-Double standing without the poster boy of the X Division proving that its all about No Limits. Aries wasn’t just an X Division wrestler, he’s the Main Event.
