With almost a full calendar year since becoming Mr. Money in the Bank, and two-times being forced to place the briefcase on the line, Dolph Ziggler finally picked his spot on the post-WrestleMania RAW to become the new WWE World Heavyweight champion.
Ziggler’s ascension into the World title picture has been a long time coming considering his multitude of loses since winning Money in the Bank. Despite the constant struggles, Ziggler did have a few moments of brilliance in his journey that suggested his time was coming: When successfully defending his briefcase against Chris Jericho’s WWE contract; and when he out-witted John Cena to retain MITB in a ladder match, which symbolized his future rise to the top.
When Dolph Ziggler won the WWE World Heavyweight championship on RAW, the emotions etched on his face were real. The celebration of hugging AJ Lee and Big E. Langston were truly heartfelt moments of jubilation. Even on SmackDown, Ziggler was hoarse from his championship celebration. The reason being, this WWE World title reign is his first real run as the World’s champion. Although the WWE record books have noted this as his second run, this is in fact his first because unlike last time, Dolph Ziggler actually left RAW with the World Heavyweight title.
Now that he’s the World Heavyweight champion, a lot more will be expected of Dolph Ziggler. For instance, when Ziggler appeared on SmackDown as the newly minted World champion, the target on his back was apparent as both Jack Swagger and Chris Jericho interrupted his promo to stake claim on the title. Then when Ziggler appeared for his match against Chris Jericho in the main event, SmackDown color commentator JBL criticized Ziggler for his “disrespect” of the championship–Dolph wore it backwards as part of his butt-shaking portion of his entrance.
A very strong opinion from a former WWE champion, but Dolph Ziggler was simply doing what he loves to do and that is Show OFF! Obviously heavily influenced by WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels, Dolph Ziggler strives on showing off both his wrestling and his charisma. Didn’t Shawn Michaels wear the WWE title around his crotch? Didn’t Shawn Michaels have semi-erotic entrances? Regardless of the outrageous persona, Shawn Michaels proved at the end of the day that he was one of the best professional wrestlers of all time, and that’s exactly the legacy Dolph Ziggler hopes to impart on the wrestling world.
So trust and believe that as the World Heavyweight champion, Dolph Ziggler has every reason to Show OFF!
