Oh, you didn’t know!? Of course the winner of the 2014 Royal Rumble was going to be [Spoiler Alert] “The Animal” Batista. The 6-time WWE champion didn’t come back after a four-year hiatus NOT to win. Plus, when you have former Evolution mentor at the helm of the company, all things are possible for Dave Batista.
Despite the obvious turnabout at the 2014 Royal Rumble, wrestling fans, and even a WWE Legend, were still in arms over the conclusion of the pay-per-view. But when it comes to WWE booking logic, especially in this new age of The Authority, it should have been obvious when positioning Daniel Bryan to face off against Bray Wyatt in a losing effort. WWE had zero intention of giving Bryan the WrestleMania main event spot, that is why they kept him away from the Royal Rumble match entirely. Which, by the way, was the “show stealing” match of the night. Too bad it was also the opening match.
The WWE Universe were livid during the WWE championship match–as Michael Cole pointed out fans feel Bryan is the uncrowned WWE champion–and throughout the closing moments of the Royal Rumble match itself. The poor WWE Superstar that got the worst of the jeers was the 2006 Royal Rumble winner Rey Mysterio because he entered at the number 30 spot, killing the chances of Daniel Bryan entering the match. For a good 15-minutes, the fans could not stop booing the competitors in the ring.
However, with a resounding record-breaking 12 eliminations, finally ending Kane’s 13-year long record, Roman Reigns managed to get the people cheering again. Then again, not even the breakout star of The Shield was any match against The Machine’s pick – Dave Batista. On a side note, Roman’s spear is better than Batista’s because he can actually connect! That’s right, I said it.
The WWE obviously knows what the fans want. From the “epic” announcement of unifying the WWE World titles, to every WWE championship match, to the Royal Rumble itself, the WWE Universe strongly chant “YES” because that’s who they believe in. The question remains whether or not WWE will stop force feeding who they think should be on top, and finally give the WWE fans what they want and deserve?
Answer the Question: What were your thoughts on the WWE Royal Rumble, and was anyone truly surprised of the outcome?
