Mercedes Martinez, the longest reining and defending WSU Champion, has held onto the belt throughout 42 World Title defenses against the likes of Mickie James, Awesome Kong, Angel Orsini, Jazz and countless others. Her opponent, Brittney Savage won the 2011 J-Cup Tournament, held on April 2, 2011, defeating the current Spirit Champion Sassy Stephanie to earn a shot at the WSU World Title on June 25, 2011.
With a retirement match, championship defenses, and The Fourth Annual Uncensored Rumble Match to determine the next contender to the WSU World Title on the card, Mercedes Martinez certainly set the standard for what fans can expect from the leading women’s wrestling promotion. It’s safe to say that no woman in the past 30 years has held onto a championship longer than Martinez, having held her championship for 30 months. So when the referee declared Brittney Savage the new WSU Champion after failing to see Martinez’s leg on the bottom rope, the fans were more than upset. The referee was unable to see the leg due to his disorientation after being struck by a misguided kick during the match. As the referee was seeing stars, Savage struck Martinez with the title and followed up with an Ace Crusher.
But unlike what goes on in WWE, the referee restarted the championship match after receiving confirmation from two other referees overseeing the match of Martinez’s leg on the bottom rope. Martinez evaded another Ace Crusher and planted Savage with her patent Fisherman Buster to successfully retain her championship.
WSU promised that Uncensored Rumble IV would be the biggest women’s wrestling event of the summer. That the future of many careers would be impacted, and that the course of WSU would change. Aside from the advertised retirement of Cindy Rogers, the biggest impact of the night was Lexxus, one-half of the WSU Tag Team Champions, winning the Rumble to become the top contender to Mercedes Martinez’s WSU Championship. Entering the Rumble as the first entrant, Lexxus was immediately joined by her Tag Team partner Amber drawing the number two slot. Known as The Boston Shore, the two scuffled through the match until they stood across from Nikki Roxx and Serena Deeb as the final four. Amber sacrificed elimination in order to grant Lexxus the opportunity to connect with a surprise missile drop kick, striking down both Roxx and Deeb. She then eliminated Roxx and evaded a spear, which caused Serena to eliminate herself.
Lexxus will challenge for the WSU Championship on August 6, 2011.
The Uncensored Rumble main event was also notable for the return of Annie Social, WSU’s first ever Tag Team Champion, who quickly eliminated Rick Cataldo. She was later eliminated by Serena Deeb, with fans respectfully chanting for Social to come back to WSU. Brittney Savage, who had her sights set on another opportunity at the WSU World Title, strategically eliminated the heavyset Amy Lee, who in turn eliminated Savage.
Alicia, the company’s first-ever WSU Champion, brawled against Jessicka Havok throughout the ACE Arena in an Uncensored Rules match. Whether it was roughhousing on top of the bleachers, or stumbling through a sea of steel chairs, Alicia and Havok tore down the house. With Allysin Kay, Havok verbally assaulted Alicia’s mother who was in attendance watching her daughter get mercilessly beat up. Then, as Havok had Alicia locked in a crippler crossface with a steel chain wrapped around her neck, Alicia’s mom threw in the towel unable to bear seeing her daughter suffocate to death.
In other bouts at Rumble IV, Sassy Stephanie defended the WSU Spirit Championship against Rain … The Boston Shore defended the WSU Tag Team Championships against Tina San Antonio & Marti Belle … Serena Deeb defeated Nikki Roxx with a spear … Niya vs Barbie was ruled a no-contest as a result of outside interference … Amy Lee scored the final pinfall among Jamilia Craft, Jana, Nikki Styx, Allysin Kay, Rick Cataldo, Monique, and Jennifer Cruz in the 8-Woman Elimination Tag match to earn the right to enter the Rumble as the final entrant … Kristin Astara, who tossed her boot to Jillian Hall to feign an inflicted injury, was declared the victor as a result of a disqualification … Cindy Rogers forced Allison Danger into submission with a Dragon Sleeper Clutch in her retirement match.
