YES! YES! YES! Once an arrogant catch phrase to get under the skin of his competitors, now the answer that Daniel Bryan hoped to get from his fiance AJ.
Weddings in professional wrestling have been done to death haven’t they? Recall Edge and Vickie? Kane and Lita? Triple H and Stephanie McMahon? Billy and Chuck? You get the point… But the one that stands out from the midst of all this confusion–and the one that started it all–is when Randy Savage finally proposed to Miss Elizabeth.
It’s been twenty-one years since the night Savage popped the question to Miss Elizabeth. Similar to Daniel Bryan’s story, Randy Savage was enthralled in a love triangle that included Hulk Hogan. “The Immortal One” and “The Macho Man” teamed up as the Mega Powers, but problems arose when Hogan decided to take Miss Elizabeth as his manager.
Savage grew insanely jealous of Hogan as Elizabeth spent time with him. Albeit professionally, Savage couldn’t tell the difference and abandoned Hogan during a tag team bout against Twin Towers (Akeem and Big Boss Man). Savage’s career soon spun out of control as he lost the WWE championship to Hogan at WrestleMania V, relied on the services of Sensational Sherri, and eventually lost a career-ending match against Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VII.
Though Savage lost his WWE career (at the time), he hadn’t stopped having feelings for Miss Elizabeth. And judging by her actions when coming to the aid of Savage when Sherri turned on him, Elizabeth hadn’t stopped loving him either. Time away from in-ring competition helped Savage asses his priorities, bringing him to pop the question, which lead to the wedding ceremony at SummerSlam 1991. The union became known as “The Match Made in Heaven”.
After losing to CM Punk at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, Daniel Bryan assessed his priorities, and realized that he does love AJ. Like Randy Savage, Bryan was too scarred to say the words. Sure, Daniel Bryan had a hidden agenda when he proposed to AJ the RAW before MITB, but without the WWE championship, Daniel Bryan is without a motive to propose except for the right one… love.
Wrestling weddings have been done to death, and I often cringe at the mention of one (Goldust and Aksana… Teddy Long and Krystal…) but for some reason Daniel Bryan and AJ works. For months AJ’s eyes have wandered from CM Punk to Kane back to Bryan… Kane admitted AJ was more mentally unstable then himself… CM Punk rejected AJ’s proposal… AJ finally broke down and called Punk’s match with Bryan down the middle… So it’s nice that there’s a payoff to this whole love triangle.
And Daniel Bryan went about things the right way (for a change). He assured that she won their mix-tag team match against The Miz and Eve Torres, and he proposed in the middle of the ring (with a ring this time). It’s sweet – plain and simple. Not saying that this union will be a “Match Made in Heaven”, but it has the potential to be something nice. Perhaps Bryan and AJ will become the next power couple of the WWE? It worked for Hunter and Stephanie as they both held the top championships in their respected divisions.
So I would like to give a toast… to the bride and groom, that you may have a beautiful wrestling wedding without any doctored photos, sex videos, wedding crashers, or unconscious wedding vows.
